A historical seminar entitled City and Identity in Algeria During the Ottoman Era: Appearance and Distinction

On Wednesday morning, 03/01/2023, the rector of the University of Blida 2 Lounici Ali, Prof. Khaled Ramoul, opened the historical national seminar entitled City and Identity in Algeria During the Ottoman Era: Appearance and Distinction in the defense room of the faculty of humanities and social sciences.

This seminar was organized by the research team Man and Town Planning in the Middle Maghreb in the Middle Ages.

The seminar aimed, on the one hand, to lay the methodological foundations for the study of the History of the city without separating it from its chronological development and its heritage, as well as from its environment and the regions associated with it, by linking to the present and the future, what depends on the identification of the systems adopted to ensure its continuity and develop its urbanization without losing its historically acquired character and identity.

On the other hand, the seminar contributed to revealing the characteristics of Algerian cities during the Ottoman period, each having acquired a personality and a social identity linked by the unity of History and civilization and favored by the intimacy of the place and the diversity of relationships and their influences.

It is worth mentioning that the seminar dealt with various axes, such as the following:
– Characteristics and manifestations of the urban field in the cities of Algeria during the Ottoman period;
– Legacies of the city society in Algeria during the Ottoman era and its activities;
– Features of urban architecture;
– Relationship between the city and the territory.
